Corneal diseases are important cause of poor vision. ASG eye hospital is accredited for Corneal transplantation and has its own eye bank also at Jodhpur.

Important corneal facilities are – Corneal Transplant, Lamellar Transplant such as DALK, DSAEK,ALTK,

C3R for Keratoconus and corneal ectasias.

Corneal Transplantation

Cornea is the transparent covering of eye which helps in passage and focus of light and also has an important protective function. Any insult like infection in cornea will cause whiteness/opacity which will decrease vision as well as has cosmetic implications. Initially glasses or contact lens any help in improvement of vision, but after a certain stage, the white/ diseased cornea needs to be replaced and a donor transparent cornea needs to be transplanted for improving vision.

Corneal transplantation has relatively higher success rate than other body organ transplantations as cornea is relatively avascular, and so blood group matching is also not required.

One donor cornea – one patient?  ::  Not anymore

With the advancement in technology and surgical skills, it has now become possible to help multiple corneal disease patients from one/ single donor corneal tissue – called as split/lamellar transplantation. DSAEK and DALK are such techniques where only the diseased/involved layer of cornea is exchanged and rest of tissue can be used for second patient.

These have improved visual recovery time and have also reduced rejection rates, as well as have created a new hope for many patients waiting for corneal transplantation.
