Modern ophthalmology is no longer confined to general practice alone. Rapid technological advances, expanding subspecialties, and rising patient expectations demand a new generation of ophthalmologists who are not only clinically competent, but also confident, ethical, and academically grounded. Structured fellowship training has therefore become not just desirable, but essential.
With this belief at its core, ASG Eye Hospital envisioned a fellowship programme that would go beyond conventional training, one that combines real world clinical exposure, surgical mentorship, academic discipline, and professional grooming under a single umbrella.
A Journey That Began with a Belief
The ASG Fellowship Programme was initiated in 2019, driven by a simple yet powerful conviction that every young ophthalmologist deserves access to structured, high quality subspecialty training within a busy, ethically driven clinical environment.
At a time when formal fellowship opportunities were limited and often concentrated in a few academic centres, ASG chose a different path embedding education directly into its clinical ecosystem. The idea was not merely to train surgeons, but to shape independent thinkers, responsible clinicians, and future leaders in ophthalmology.
What started as a focused academic initiative gradually evolved into a structured, nationwide programme, strengthened by consistent mentorship, high volume clinical exposure, a strong academic framework, and a culture that values ethics and patient-centric care as much as surgical excellence.
The Programme Today
Now in its Seventh year, the ASG Fellowship Programme stands as a testament to what sustained academic intent can achieve within a large clinical network. Fellows undergo structured training with defined curricula, quarterly evaluations, case presentations, journal clubs, and mandatory research activity, ensuring all-round professional development.
The programme aims not only to build surgical skills, but also to instil sound clinical judgement, ethical decision making, effective communication, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
For the current academic cycle, the ASG Fellowship Entrance Examination will be held on 12th July. Selection continues to follow a transparent, merit based process, reflecting ASG’s commitment to academic integrity and excellence.
