Varanasi, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, is revered as the birthplace of cataract surgery. The legendary surgeon Sushruta performed the first documented cataract surgery here around 600 BC. In his Sushruta Samhita, he described pioneering ophthalmic techniques, holistic training, and ethical patient care — principles that continue to shape modern ophthalmology.
