About Dr. Jayant Kumar

Dr. Jayant is an internationally acclaimed vitreo-retina surgeon from Jharkhand, recognized for his expertise in handling complex retinal surgeries with exceptional results. He is a recipient of the prestigious Senior Honor Award and Honor Award by the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). In 2026, he was also conferred the prestigious Rhett Buckler Award by the American Society of Retina Specialists for his innovative surgical technique, BEST Vitrectomy, developed for the management of extremely chronic retinal detachment cases, which garnered widespread praise from the global retina community. He has been a regular faculty member at several national and international conferences and has delivered invited lectures in Singapore, Stockholm, and California in recent years.

Dr Kumar brought pride to the Jharkhand ophthalmology community by winning the Best Vitreo-retina Surgery Award at the prestigious International Film Festival Award during the All India Ophthalmological Society Conference 2023 held in Kochi, garnering national acclaim. Dr. Kumar is amongst the few specialists in Jharkhand capable of successfully screening and treating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) cases of any grade, including both laser and surgical treatments. With extensive experience in cataract surgery, he routinely manages complicated and difficult cataract cases and possesses expertise in premium and toric intraocular lenses (IOLs). His surgical work has received widespread appreciation in various national and international forums, particularly for his innovative approaches.
Acknowledged as an innovator by the Scientific Committee of the All India Ophthalmic Society, Dr. Kumar has been invited multiple times to deliver talks on his groundbreaking innovations. During his six-year tenure at the retina department of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, he had valuable learning opportunities and played a crucial role in the team that internationally published and recognized a novel retinal surgical technique called ‘The Mega Weiss Ring.’

Dr. Kumar was honored with the Best Video Award at Retina Summit 2017 organized by Shankar Netralaya, Chennai. He has consistently been a finalist in various paper and video presentations at national and international conferences in the past, including J M Pahwa session of VRSI, C S Reshmi session of AIOS and many more.
Since 2024, Dr. Jayant has been mentoring vitreo-Retina fellows on a focused one-to-one basis, with high volume surgical exposure on all varieties of vitreo-retinal surgeries, including macular surgeries, scleral buckling and complex vitrectomies, emphasizing step-wise, simulator-based surgical training with close personal supervision, under the fellowship program of ASG Academic cell and his fellow has made a national record of becoming the youngest vitreo-retina surgeon from India to receive multiple international and national laurels, including senior honor award by the American Society of Retina Specialists.
